St Clarets 0-9 v St Josephs 0-10
By Patrick Keane of The Irish World
In what was a feisty and competitive affair, St Josephs fought their way to a close victory over St Clarets at Ruislip on Sunday.
The win for Josephs was a classic reminder of the talent this side possessed when they won the Junior title back in 2011. As for St Clarets, their bright start along with their tremendous fight and determination shown in this game proved that this side has matured since their relegation a few years back.
It was Clarets who started the game on the front foot, working with a tenacious pace to retain and recycle possession. This hard work earned the men in green an early three point lead, thanks to the tremendous movement from forward Patrick Lynott and clinical finishing by Barry Lynch.
The man to get Josephs back in the game was Tom McGahern, whose explosive forward runs from midfield, earned him two points in the first half. Great credit has also got to be installed on Josephs' goalkeeper Conor Hallises, whose acrobatics saw him produce some top saves early on in this enthralling encounter.
At half-time, St Clarets entered the break with a slim one-point lead, with the scores 0-6 to 0-5. As the second half commenced St Clarets rang the changes, bringing on three substitutes to freshen up their team's approach.
Despite the mass introductions, it was Josephs substitute Mark McNulty who made the real impact, scoring three points in the final 15 minutes to clinch victory for side. McNulty's fresh legs and accurate shooting ability was a main reason the Joes edged the final crucial moments of the game.
The score of the match came from St Josephs' reliable forward, Shane Longworth, who after a scintillating run that saw him beat three players, calmly and coolly punched the ball between the posts.
With the clock ticking down, not even two well dispatched Shane Buckley frees was enough to see a late fight back become a reality. With three minutes left of added time, Clarets pushed hard for a leveller, but were unable to find the killer finish so evident in the first half.
As the final whistle blew, St Josephs celebrations had an air of relief attached to it, with the winning side riding out a tough bombardment from a Clarets offense that pushed them right till the end.
Team: Michael Joyce; Matt Healy, Liam O'Keefe, John O'Dowd ; Dave McMahon, Aidan Donaghy, Ricky Daly; Brian McNeice, Paddy Donaghy; Shane Buckley, Tomas Gilmore, Stephen Lenihan; Sean Beirne, Patrick Lynott, Barry Lynch. Subs: Luke Kelly for O'Dowd; Eamonn Colleran for Gilmore; Stephen Donoghue for Lenihan.

St Clarets 1-11 v Dulwich Gaels 3-10
Venue: Greenford
Time: 3pm
Dulwich Gaels drew first blood in this encounter and in doing so took a grip of the race for promotion out of Division Three.
St Clarets, unbeaten so far in the league up until this game started slowly and allowed Dulwich to gain a firm foothold in the game. The men in green and white were constantly guilty of standing off and showing their opponents too much respect and then compounding matters by conceding too many silly frees.
By half time St Clarets were trailing by 2-5 to 0-5, with the hoops' scores coming from Shane Buckley (2), Eammonn Hughes (2) and a single point from Patrick Lynott.
The second half showed an improvement in effort and return from St Clarets, but in general the performance was well below what this team is capable of.
Young Shane Buckley was once again one of the shining stars for the team and contributed a few outstanding points, including one from way out.
Best for a disappointing St Clarets were: Shane Buckley for his continued progression and memorable points; Dave McMahon who played acvery good in midfield alongside Brian McNeice; Stephen Sherry, Rickie Daly and Paddy Donaghy for spirit and determination.
Team: Michael Joyce; Matt Healy, Liam O'Keefe, John O'Dowd; Steven Sherry, Aidan Donaghy, Ricky Daly; Paddy Donaghy, David McMahon (0-2); Luke Kelly, Patrick Lynott (1-2), Shane Buckley (0-3); Stephen O'Donoghue, Eammonn Hughes (0-3), Kavan Fitzpatrick (0-1). St Clarets made a quick start to this league game when straight from the throw-in the ball was played from midfield into full forward Eammon Hughes, who duly slotted over the bar.
Hughes then got another from a free, before a long high ball from midfield ended up being misjudged by the Gaels' defence and falling into the back of the net.
This stirred the losers somewhat and they almost immediately registered their first score of the game.
Luke Kelly ran nearly the full length of the pitch interchanging passes from John O'Dowd, Brian MacNeice and scored a lovely point at pace. Hughes then got another from play.
The Gaels tried in vain to keep in touch by knocking over a number of frees but soon the game started to slip from them as Kerryman Barry Lynch got the first of his three goals for the afternoon.
Tomas Gilmore also helped himself to a goal and point, before Lynch bagged his second.
All the while Tir Chonaill Gaels were only getting the odd point, however, two more points by St Clarets left the men in green leading by 12-points at the break.
Half-Time: St Clarets 4-07: Tir Chonaill Gaels 0-07
Patrick Lynott made a welcome return to the team after a period out with injury at half-time when he replaced Stephen Donoghue.
The second period started well with a point from half-back Rickie Daly and free from Hughes.
The Gaels now had what appeared to be a strengthening breeze in their favour, which they put to good use for an impressive total of 10-point in the second half, although the flurry of changes made by St Clarets in this second half did help contribute to a less composed performance from the winners in this period.
That said though, they were also aided by some indiscipline from the Clarets players, especially in terms of dissent.
Barry Lynch got his third goal before being substituted and replaced by Paul Nolan, while Sean McCarthy replaced Matt Healy.
Corner forward Stephen Lenihan hit the post for a goal chance followed by another off the post shot from Tomas Gilmore.
Paul Nolan added another two-points, before Pat Lynott got St Clarets' final point of the game.
Shane Buckley had yet another impressive game for the seniors and is proving to be a very strong prospect for St Clarets. He was very cool under pressure, showed great strength to pass out of and go through some tough tackles and was instrumental in setting up many of the Clarets attacks and scores.

St Clarets began their Division 3 League campaign with a scrappy, hard fought victory over Shalloe Pearse on Sunday in Greenford.
Having impressed in their last two outings against teams from higher divisions, few would have expected the Clarets to make such hard work of this assignment, but as it was, they were lucky to get away with a win against a dogged, if somewhat wasteful, Shalloe Pearse side.
Kerryman Barry Lynch opened the scoring for the winners with a point from play, which was followed by a point from a free by Tyrone man Eammonn Hughes, after he himself had been fouled.
Shalloe Pearse replied quickly though, but this was immediately cancelled by a neat point from play from Adrian Gilmore.
The advantage was short‐lived though as Shalloe Pearse, in one of their most fluid moments, had the ball in the back of the St Clarets net to put them one‐point ahead.
This score stirred the Hayes men into action and after a nice interchange of passing coming from midfield involving Gilmore, Lynch and Gary Wynne, they replied with a goal of their own through Lynch, to leave the half‐time score St Clarets 1‐3: Shalloe Pearse 1‐1.
As difficult and scrappy as the first half was, things did not improve any in the second as both teams continued to slug it out in what were wet and windy conditions.
The winners managed to add just three more points in the second half, with another free from Hughes, a score from play from the impressive Lynch and a final point from recent recruit, Galway man Joe Corcoran.
Shalloe Pearse themselves could only muster two points in the second half, one from play and the other from a free.
It was a game in which St Clarets failed to spark and had their opposition had a reliable accurate free taker then it is quite possible that the result would have been reversed.
Team: Paul Myers; Matt Healy, Liam O'Keefe, John O'Dowd; James Hanna, Aidan Donaghy, Ricky Daly; Paddy Donaghy, Brian MacNeice, Gary Wynne, Adrian Gilmore (0‐1), Stephen Donoghue; Barry Lynch (1‐2), Eammonn Hughes (0‐2), Stephen Lenihan. Subs: Luke Kelly for Hanna; Colin O'Malley for Wynne; Shane Buckley for Donoghue; Joe Corcoran (0‐1) for Lenihan.

Liam O'Keefe, Conor Brady, Bryan O'Donovan, John O'Dowd, Brian MacNeice, Paddy Donaghy, Matthew Healy, David McMahon, Adrian Gilmore, Paul Nolan, John McDermott, James Bruan. Front Row L‐R. The seniors lost a closely fought Tipperary Cup match on Sunday to Heston Gaels by 1-11 to 3-8.
Following a much improved performance from their first outing against Cu Chullainns three weeks ago, St Clarets seniors were unlucky to end this Murphy Cup fixture at Greenford without at least a share of the spoils.
The side started well with a quick a point from recent signing Eammonn Hughes, before Pat Lynott saw his shot hit the side netting within the first 5 minutes. However, minutes later Hughes made up for that miss when he slotted home a penalty.
This score stirred Heston who finally got on the score sheet, although St Clarets responded immediately with two more points from play by Hughes.
Heston pegged one back, before Hughes put a sideline ball over the bar with the outside of his boot, for an excellent score.
St Clarets were looking good all over the field with some good support running to help get the side out of trouble from the intelligent Aiden Donaghy, while veteran pair Paddy Donaghy and Brain MacNeice covered a lot of ground at midfield.
Lynott added another point to his side's tally before having to be substituted due to an injury, a real blow for the men in green and white. He was replaced by Sean Beirne, while Paul Nolan was also substituted for Adrian Gilmore before the break, with St Clarets leading 1-4 to 0-3.
Kerry man Barry Lynch knocked over two points shortly after the re‐start, before Heston pegged one back.
However, disaster struck when St Clarets conceded two soft goals followed by a point.
Undeterred though, they battled back into the game with points from Dean Nugent and Hughes, while Heston replied with three more points to take them clear again. Lynch and Hughes got points to peg the score back again, but it was all too late for St Clarets.
While the result was disappointing, the effort and display will raise the spirits of all involved with the senior team, and is showing the benefits of the excellent attitude at training so far this year and the great work being done by coaches Ciaran Lenihan and Tadhg Lee.

Saturday saw Cuchulainns take part in their first competitive game of the season against St Clarets in the first round of the Murphy Cup.
Both teams started quickly in a game that was always going to be affected by the weather with Cuchulainns opting to play with the wind in the first half.
There was a great first half battle between St Clarets Barry Lynch and the Cuchulainns Anferny Tighe at midfield.
Cuchulainns seemed quicker to the breaking ball with Danny Denton and Michael Murphy feeding off every loose ball they could get their hands on. This possession was key as it gave the Cu's forwards the supply they needed to put scores on the board.
A great one-two between Kinsella and new-comer Robbie Croft led to the games opening goal. Points from Aidan Power, Chris Eastwood and Biggane left the scores at 1-8 to 0-1 at half time.
The overall score line does not do any justice to the heart shown by the Clarets who seemed to control a lot of the possession early in the second half.
With a fine performance from Patrick Lynott at centre forward, whose direct runs at the Cuchulainns defence helped add three points to the St Clarets total, followed by a great score from Adrian Gilmore at full forward, St Clarets have a lot of positives to take away from the game.
Notable mentions should go out to David McMahon, John O'Dowd and Aidan Donaghy for their performances as they kept fighting to the final whistle.
Kinsella finished with a solid 2-2 and new comer Robbie Croft, who had an impressive first game for Cuchulians, scored 1-2 on his debut from play.
It wouldn't be a Cuchulainns match report with out mentioning Christopher Eastwood. Chris played his last game in the Cuchullians jersey on Saturday and scored 1-4 on the day, a tally that is not at all uncommon for such a prolific forward.
